Welcome back to what we are calling “the first day of the best year in the history of Wylie ISD.” It seems like our little school district can’t go more than a month without winning a big award for excellence!
We owe it all to our great teachers, kids, parents and the broader communities we serve. In that spirit, I want to encourage everyone to enjoy the first day with us.
Recently, I was preparing to mow the lawn. As I walked out of the door, the sidewalk blinded me with a golden shimmer of glitter!
This is when I typically yell my daughter’s name and ask her to clean up her mess. Those messes come in different forms. I find robots, sewing machines, duct tape, shrinky dinks (yes shrinky dinks), clay, wire, cans, stuff from the trash, etc. Before the “Kate, you have something to pick up,” came out of my mouth…I paused and reflected. It reminded me that the glitter won’t always be on the sidewalk, but traded someday for more grown up things.
It was just yesterday that our dog, Bruno, experienced the frequent torture of dress up. Outfits featuring the latest princess or superhero were commonplace. Bruno has been outfit free for a few years. He seems happier.
If you dare, you may enter the gauntlet of dropping your kid off for the first day of school. We have been preparing for weeks to make the first day an awesome experience.
In fact, this picture was taken late in the evening last week at Smith Elementary. These are the cars of teachers who are working late to make sure this first day rocks!
I must be honest, the first day is always a little crowded, confusing and perhaps, stressful to parents, kids and our staff too. It’s almost always this way, and a positive attitude (and a little extra patience) goes a long way. The first day of school only happens once a year. I always say that the days are long, but the years are short. Special moments, like glitter on the sidewalk or dressing up the dog, are gone before you know it. There are only so many first days of school. Join us in making them special for our kids.
Thank you for making this first day awesome, it’s the Wylie Way!
