If you visit Dr. Addington in Wolfforth, Texas (near Lubbock) you will most likely be greeted by his nurse Johnnie. If you meet Johnnie, you won’t forget her. Even if you had a fever and cough, her attitude alone made you feel better. I haven’t been to Dr. Addington’s office in more than 12 years. I don’t know if she even works there anymore. She made such an impact, I have never forgotten her. Why, because Johnnie LOVES her job and it shows. Shouldn’t everyone? Not the case according to the Gallup Organization, where they report that only 1 in 5 people are engaged in their work. What can we do in Wylie ISD to improve our kid’s chances to find a career they love? Welcome to Map Your Future Day at Wylie ISD!
Wish vs. Plan
We all dream about an exciting career and an ideal tomorrow. We may even have a goal to get there. However, a goal without a plan is simply a wish. We want more than a wish for our kids. They need a plan and purpose. For the next 9 weeks, we are going on a journey at school to help them add a plan and purpose to pursue their goals for an outstanding career. Please watch this short video every student will experience this week to help them understand how important planning for their future is and that starting NOW increases their chances of matching their strengths and passion with an awesome career.
Map Your Future
A few years ago, I was talking with a kid who said he wanted to be a pilot. I asked him if he knew how to get there??? He didn’t. For the next 30 minutes, we used a napkin and wrote a very general plan to help him get from 8th grade to the Air Force Academy with a few objectives along the way to mark progress. What we created that day was a map for his future. Version 2.0 is much better! Our Wylie Way folks have created something we are calling the WISD Treasure Map for our kids to complete and keep as a similar guide for their future self.
This map can be their reference point for achieving their career goals now and for years to come. From their interests and careers to what it takes to get there and even some potential obstacles they can prepare for along the way, our kids will have a plan for their purpose.
How Can Parents Help?
We understand that there is no more important part of this process than moms and dads helping their kids achieve their plan and purpose. We have provided you an overview of our entire day we spent with your kids. Take some time to click on this link and explore what they discussed today.
Mapping Your Future Day Secondary Parent Guide
We encourage you to talk about this with your kids. If you can take some time with your kids and stress the importance and value of hope, strengths as well as “plan and purpose,” it will go a long way in helping us to create achieving kids, the Wylie Way!
