One of our school board goals is to “Attract, retain and value a quality staff.” We take this goal very seriously because it makes the single biggest impact on student achievement. A recent article published by the Association for Supervision and Curriculum Development, described a recent study focusing on what happened to students whose teachers produced high achievement versus those whose teachers produced low achievement results.
The Study
Beginning in 3rd grade, kids were placed with three high-performing teachers in a row, they scored at the 96th percentile on a statewide mathematics assessment at the end of 5th grade. Conversely, children with comparable achievement histories starting in 3rd grade were placed with three low-performing teachers in a row, their average score on the same mathematics assessment was at the 44th percentile.
